On 8th April, 1915, the 2nd Gloucestershire battalion of 81 Brigade, 27th Division moved into trenches at Herenthage Chateau near Hill 60 to the south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 12th April. Records, including those of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, show that Sydney Callaghan was killed on 8th April but the battalion diary seems to suggest that it was on 11th April. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
